Kale Shake

This recipe is so good it only needs two words. There are lots of different kale shakes out there, but this is one of the best I’ve tried and you’re sure to love it too. Joe Rogan — most of you probably know him from his commentating for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or his gig watching people choke down cockroaches on Fear Factor; he’s also a stand-up comedian and is known for playing Joe Garrelli on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio and his uber-popular The Joe Rogan Experience podcast — drinks this shake almost every morning, as his loyal podcast listeners are well aware. His Twitter followers are also constantly raving about this delicious drink.

Kale is one of the best things you’ll ever put in your body. It’s as simple as that. As one of the healthiest vegetables on the planet overall, everyone should take advantage of all this lush, leafy green has to offer and make it a staple on their grocery list. A single cup of chopped kale contains only 33 calories and gives you 9% of the daily value of calcium, 206% of vitamin A, 134% of vitamin C, and 684% of vitamin K. Not only does it offer all that, but it’s also packed full of cancer-fighting antioxidants and fibre. It’s great for helping with weight loss and strengthening immune function, not to mention its anti inflammatory properties and versatility, making it an ideal ingredient, especially for the vegetarian or vegan.

Try this drink for yourself and reap not only the incredible health benefits, but also the satisfying taste if you’re a green health-lover like myself, which I’m sure you are, or you would be sick of reading this already.

Kale Shake

  • Servings: 1
  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Ingredients:

1 cucumber, sliced
4 stalks kale
4 celery stems
1 pear, sliced
1/2-inch piece fresh ginger root
8 ounces water

Directions:

1. Blend all the ingredients together in a blender, in order, until smooth. You can add more or less water, depending on the consistency you prefer.

All of the rinds are left on in Joe’s version of the kale shake, so you’re getting lots of extra fiber, but you can peel everything before blending if you prefer.
